Till säsongen lämnade Rossi Yamaha och bytte till italienska Ducati. Han var inte tillräckligt konkurrenskraftig för att hänga med Stoner och Lorenzo.
Det blev Rossis första VM-säsong utan seger. Höjdpunkerna var andraplatserna i Frankrike och San Marino. Tillbaka hos Yamaha började Rossi säsongen bra med andraplatsen i Qatar.
Normalt hängde dock Rossi inte med sin team-kamrat Lorenzo och Hondas fabriksförare Pedrosa och Marquez. Rossi slutade fyra i VM och avslutade samarbetet med Jeremy Burgess som varit Rossis chefsmekaniker sedan Han ersattes till av Silvano Galbusera.
